Being Open-source, everyone went with their own flavors. Nowadays, it’s cheaper to stock a dozen of those @ <3$ and use a new one for every project.

More recently, we’ve seen 32bits Microcontrollers at the same cost as 8/16 bits version. And the amazing thing is that the open-source community brought them up into the Arduino IDE world to kickstart more project with even greater power
